A small potted rose marks the memorial flag for Pauline Singelmann, a poignant reminder for all the lives lost to hurricane Katrina in Louisiana.

 • 30 May, 2006. Lakeview, New Orleans, Louisiana. Mosquito breeding grounds. Stagnant pools and out of control weeds grow in the once affluent, predominantly white Lakeview neighbourhood close to the 17th Street Canal levee breach. Nine months after hurricane Katrina, burst water mains and ruined infrastructure continue to seep water, creating fetid pools where mosquitos breed. Lakeview was devastated by flooding after Hurricane Katrina.

 • 07 June 2010. Pointe aux Chenes, Louisiana.
Fading away. White pelicans in wetlands south of Pointe Aux Chenes. Oil washing up on the marsh grasses threatens everything. If the grass dies, there is nothing left to hold the land. All of this was solid ground just 100 years ago. Diversion of the mighty Mississippi River diverted sediment from the wetlands and deposited precious land building material deep out at sea. At present, all these fishing grounds are closed. Members of the Pointe aux Chenes Indians, settlers that can trace their roots beyond 5 generations back to France face extinction of their very way of life, their very existence. French cajun is the language of the elders, but is dying out in the children of today. BP's catastrophic oil spill threatens everything, their way of life and the land on which they live. Not recognised by the federal government, the 680 member tribe struggles for funds in a small community that survives only because of fishing and oil extraction in the Gulf of Mexico.
Olivier and Belinda Tirel, (both 45 yrs old) owners of La Cave de Montreuil and Le Touquet with their emergency vehicle, the 'Vinbulance.'

Belinda, an Australian met Olivier, a Frenchman in England when they both worked at Café Rouge in Kew Gardens in London in 1996. Married 24 years with 4 children they own 2 wine shops, one in Le Touquet (since 2007) and one in Montreuil Sur Mer (since 2015).

Belinda came up with the idea of the 'Vinbulance' having seen a photo of a 'winebulance' on the internet. Olivier and Belinda contacted friends who are doctors, nurses and medical technicians before embarking on the idea. They wanted to check that their idea would not be offensive to those working on the front lines against coronavirus. All their friends in the medical profession thought it would be an excellent idea to try and cheer people up, bring a smile to their faces and help lift people's spirits in these difficult times. 'Which was the point of it,' explained Olivier.

'People give us thumbs up, toot their horns and wave when they see the 'vinbulance.' Belinda was stopped twice in the past 2 days with people asking to take photos of her and the 'vinbulance' explained Olivier. 'One person, a regular customer even ordered some wine because he did not know we were open.'

'The coronavirus crisis has badly affected business. We have lost all of our restaurant trade and people just are not having parties and celebrating as they were before all this,' explained Olivier.

'We are considered a business of 'première nécessité,' (first necessity) as declared by the French Government which means we can remain open. We don't get any help from the government financially, we have 4 children and a Brazilian exchange student who is staying with us beca

Two dead catfish make up a small fraction of carnage at the beach. 6 dead stingrays also littered a half mile stretch of beach. Whether it's early indications of oil pollution, or catch tossed from a local fishing pier, it is truly tragic to find so many once fine, now dead fish in such a short stretch of beach. Either way, it shows a callous disregard for the environment in which we live. Meanwhile all around locals, tourists and visitors relax and enjoy the beauty of South Beach, an hour from New Orleans. Just a few miles off the coast, an impending disaster looms. With the continual flood of oil washing into the Gulf of Mexico and as winds turn and begin to push from the south, it is only and matter of when, not if the oil reaches the beaches. The barrier islands offshore are taking a battering soaking up the initial fronts of oil threatening everything in it's ever encroaching path.
Wildlife abounds on the beaches. The 'laughing gull' colonies are in the middle of spring nesting. All wildlife is potentially threatened by the oil slick in the gulf.
