  • 1 June, 2006. Lower 9th Ward, New Orleans, Louisiana. First day of hurricane season. Wishful thinking on cleared ground beside the massive, 4,000 ft long, $34 million flood wall, rebuilt by Cajun Contractors for the Army Corps of Engineers is almost complete and stands, in theory, ready to protect the devastated Lower 9th Ward from the Inner Harbor Navigational Canal. Photographed is the area where a huge barge smashed through the original flood wall, where a tidal wave of water rushed through, devastating the area where so many people died.

A Banksy original street graffiti artwork known as 'Rain Girl' is chopped from a wall. A considerably irrational and unpleasant 'private art handler' from Los Angeles, giving his name only as Chris has prepared the wall for removal from an old abandoned store in New Orleans on the corner of North Rampart and Kerlerec streets. Chris claims the artwork is to be shipped to London for a Tate Modern retrospective of Banksy's work in April. Chris also claims the artwork will be re-installed at its current location once the exhibition is finished - a claim local residents seriously doubt.<br />

Banksy ‘thieves’ busted cutting original grafitti art work from shop wall<br />
<br />

<br />
A BOGUS construction crew were chased off after they were busted cutting an original Banksy from a wall.<br />
One of the gang, who called himself Chris, was caught holding a power drill half-way through extracting the work by the British street artist.<br />
<br />
Hidden by a temporary wall of plywood, he told snapper Charlie Varley that the 2008 artwork – dubbed “Umbrella Girl” – would be shipped to London for a Tate Modern retrospective of Banksy’s career.<br />
He added that it would be re-installed at its current location on the side of an abandoned store in New Orleans, US, once the exhibition had finished.<br />
<br />
But when local residents quizzed the men and ordered them to show a permit for the operation, they packed up their equipment and scarpered.<br />
A security guard was installed at the scene on Friday to make sure the suspected thieves did not return.<br />
Clay Lapeyrouse, who lives nearby, said: “They were cutting it out of the building. The story they gave me just seemed weird."<br />
<br />
Police are now hunting the suspects, aged between 25 and 35, following the incident.<br />
Banksy’s work fetches huge sums at auction, with his Kissing Coppers mural going under the hammer for £345,000 in the US last week.<br />

  • 28 August 2006 - New Orleans - Louisiana. Lakeview. Colonel Bedey, Commander of the Hurricane Protection office, Army Corps of Engineers at the head of the 17th Steet canal, close to where the levee breached, destroying the mostly white, affluent area of Lakeview. Bedey assures us that the current levee system is as good as, and up to at least the same strength as the pre Katrina levees. Not really all that good news a year later, considering the level of protection the last lot of levees gave the city!

Friends and family of Cory Acosta came from as far away as North carolina to help tear out sheet rock, pick up garbage and do all they can to help people rebuild their lives in Saint Bernard parish just south of New Orleans. Family portraits and treasured art work is stacked up against the gutted walls of Acosta's house. Hurricane Katrina caused a 20ft tidal surge to sweep over the land, devastating much of the parish.<br />

Civilians gathered at the site of the breach of the industrial canal for the Great Flood commemoration and memorial ceremony to 'honor and remember our loved ones who have passed.' People came to mark the anniversary of devastating hurricane Katrina at the site where the now repaired and allegedly in theory stronger levee flood wall. The levee breached along the industrial canal at the point where people gathered, needlessly killing hundreds of innocent civilians in the worst engineering disaster in US history.

Interesting graffiti - 'It's time to unfuck the world' on a wall in the ancient alpine town of Annecy in South West France. Annecy sits on Lake Annecy which feeds into the Thiou River. The town is famous for its Vieille Ville (old town), with cobbled streets, winding canals and pastel-coloured houses. The medieval Château d’Annecy, once home to the Counts of Geneva overlooks the town.<br />

  • 1 June, 2006. Lower 9th Ward, New Orleans, Louisiana. First day of hurricane season. Children of the storm return home. R/L; Arthur Murph clambers out of the rubble of what remains of his home. His daughters' friend Renisha Menendez (11 yrs) retrieves an evacuation suitcase he packed for his daughter Ariana, but was never able to get out before the home was destroyed. They stand in the wreckage of what used to be Murph and Ariana's home at 1739 Jourdan Ave in the devastated Lower 9th Ward. The huge barge which smashed through the original flood wall came to rest in front of their house, where a tidal wave of water rushed through, devastating the area where so many people died. Four of Arthur's neighbours perished in the storm. Arthur was in his home when the levee breached, he claims the night of the 28th August, 2005, the night before Hurricane Katrina made landfall. Arthur smashed his way out of his roof and swam to a neighbors house where he remained for 3 days awaiting rescue. Arthur can not go into details because of a pending lawsuit. He appears in the Spike Lee movie about the storm.
