Genelle Guzman-McMillan - nee Genelle Guzman. Aftermath of 9/11 Terrorist attack on World Trade Centre.
Last known survivor.
Gentle Guzman has a bandage applied to her ankle by her boyfriend Roger McMillan at Bellevue hospital as she recovers from being trapped in the rubble of the World Trade Centers debris. Gentle was trapped for 27 hours, pinned by heavy debris after the buildings collapsed around her killing her work colleagues. By some miracle Genelle attributes to God she was spared. Gentle was found by a German Shepherd rescue dog named Trakr and his handler James Symington.
Genelle was told she would never recover from the crushing injuries to her legs, however she has since overcome the odds and went on to marry her sweetheart Roger McMillan who cared for in hospital throughout her ordeal.
Post 9/11 World Trade Center attack.
John Philips arrives at girlfriend Urania's home in Harlem after his own luxury apartment 2 blocks from the World Trade Centre Twin Towers was rendered uninhabitable following the collapse of the buildings. John was granted special permission to enter his once luxury apartment close to where the World Trade Center Twin Towers used to stand. His apartment is now filled with dust and debris from the collapsed towers. John and residents of the building were evacuated following the attack which cut off water and electricity supplies. A week after the attack, residents were given just 15 minutes to gather necessary belongings and leave their apartments which by default rendered them homeless, perhaps the first refugees of the War on Terror. Residents were warned to check their balconies for victims of the Twin Towers who might have fallen to their deaths.
In the chaos of 9/11, John's sister Dr Sneha Ann Philip disappeared. John claimed she used to walk past the Twin Towers every morning on her way to work. He fears she might be a victim of the coordinated Al Qaeda attack which claimed over 2,000 victims at the site of the Twin Towers.
It was later discovered that his sister was indeed just one more of the many victims killed in the attack.
Post 9/11 World Trade Center attack.
John Philips (center) meets with a couple of firefighter rescue workers, Greg Conlan (L) and Scott Parkin (rt) as he hands out posters for his missing sister Sneha who was last seen around the World Trade Centre moments before the first plane hit the Twin Towers. Despite working a 16 hour shift digging through the rubble of the World Trade Centre, the firemen insisted on giving John $15 for him to print more posters. They also took some with them to hand around on site just in case anyone should come across Sneha. Earlier in the day John been granted special permission to enter his once luxury apartment 2 blocks from where the World Trade Center Twin Towers used to stand. His apartment is now filled with dust and debris from the collapsed towers. John and residents of the building were evacuated following the attack which cut off water and electricity supplies. Post 9/11 World Trade Center attack.
John Philips is granted special permission to enter his once luxury apartment just 2 blocks from where the World Trade Center Twin Towers used to stand. His apartment is now filled with dust and debris from the collapsed towers. John and residents of the building were evacuated following the attack which cut off water and electricity supplies. A week after the attack, residents were given just 15 minutes to gather necessary belongings and leave their apartments which by default rendered them homeless.
At home with Helen Wilson, a survivor of the Bataclan nightclub massacre of November 13th 2015 which claimed the lives of 90 people inside the club, 130 in total with co-ordinated attacks across Paris. Helen holds a painting she made of one of her enduring visions of the deadly attack, one where she holds her hands up to beg the terrorists to stop shooting and bullet casings lie scattered on the floor covered in a sea of blood.

Helen, an American living in Paris went to see the music of American rock band Eagles of Death Metal at the Bataclan nightclub with her former British boyfriend Nick Alexander. Soon after the shooting started, a Frenchman near where they were lying on the floor taking cover started shouting obscenities at the attackers. Helen describes how 2 terrorists came over to the area near where Helen and Nick were lying on the floor. One of the attackers raised his kalashnikov and opened fire. Nick was shot in the stomach and Helen was shot twice, once in each thigh. Helen raised her hands and begged the shooter to stop, which she says he did, then he calmly walked away. Nick's injuries however proved to be fatal and he died in her arms before police could rescue them. Nick Alexander was the only British victim of the horrific attacks. Helen miraculously survived despite losing 4 pints of blood and was saved by paramedics after police stormed the building. Helen's story is one of unimaginable tragedy, of strength, courage under fire, resilience and survival. Helen still receives counselling and physical therapy to help cope with the continuing aftermath of the attack. She is an inspiration to many she talks to as she speaks to other trauma survivors and disaffected youth.
Makeshift tribute to firemen Edward Day, Matt Rogan, Mike Quilty, Rich Kelly, Mike Cammarata, John Heffernan. Missing presumed dead. Hero firefighter, colleagues of Mike Kehoe of Engine 28, Ladder 11 pictured in a memorial erected at their firehouse on East 2nd Street in the East village early in the morning of Sept 14th.
Mike Kehoe's image had been published the day before on front pages around the world. It is the iconic image of him ascending the stairs of the World Trade Center as he helped to evacuate people from the terrorist attacks of 9/11. It was assumed Mike had perished when the buildings collapsed. However Mike had miraculously managed to escape the buildings moments before they collapsed. 6 members of his crew were not so fortunate. Mike became a symbol of heroism to many following the vicious Al Queda attacks which claimed over 2,000 victims at the WTC site. This images was published exclusively on the Front Page of the Daily Mirror on 15th Sept, 2001.
• September 15th, 2005. New York, New York.
Daily Mirror, London. Front page.
Days after the 9/11 attack on New York City my good friend Andy Lines, then the USA's Daily Mirror Bureau chief called me at 4am. 'Get up,' he demanded. 'I'll meet you outside your hotel in 20 minutes!' Andy had been able to track down Mike Kehoe. Kehoe had appeared on front pages around the world. He was the firefighter who had been photographed climbing the stairs of the World Trade center as everyone else was fleeing. It was assumed Mr Kehoe had been killed in the attack, even Tony Blair had offered his condolences for Kehoe in the British Houses of Parliament. Days later Andy discovered that Kehoe had managed to escape the building and survived through the brave actions of his unit and his commander who had pulled them out just as the building started to collapse. Then Mirror editor Piers Morgan phoned to ask if I had any images of Kehoe where he wasn't smiling? 'This is serious shit,' Morgan stated. I had to point out that Mr Kehoe is not so much smiling, more suffering from severe shock and the fact that his chief woke him up at 5am. I was able to get just 6 frames of Mr Kehoe before he had to ask if we could stop. 'Thanks,' he said, 'I'm no hero, many of my friends are dead. I'm just exhausted.' We thanked him and his colleagues for their bravery. His unit offered us a ride back to our hotels in their battered fire truck which was full of dust from the collapsed buildings with most of the glass smashed out. The interview and the photographs were a world exclusive for the Daily Mirror. As Andy and I left the fire station, the world's media descended upon the place. All further interviews and images were denied at that time.
