• 26 June 2020. Zone des Dunes, refugee camp, Calais, France.
A young refugee mother sits at the side of the road with her young 2 year old son close to the tented refugee camp at Zone des Dunes in Calais, a relatively new refugee camp which sprang up just outside the notorious 'Jungle' camp which was closed down by authorities. The mother who did not wish to be named is a refugee from war torn Eritrea. She made her way overland from Eritrea to Sudan and from Sudan through what she described as extremely dangerous Libya. From Libya she was able to get on a boat to Italy where she then boarded a train to Austria and eventually Germany where her son was born. The young mother claimed conditions in Germany were atrocious and she left for France where she has lived in the refugee camp at Calais for almost 6 months. Her dream is to find safety and sanctuary for herself and her little boy in the United Kingdom.
'See you in UK!' Graffiti painted on a train signalling control box close to Zone des Dunes refugee camp in Calais. Several tented refugee camps have cropped up to replace the notorious 'Jungle' camp which was dismantled by French authorities in October and November 2016. Migrants assembling in the Zone are making often desperate attempts to cross the English Channel (La Manche) by boat, surf board and even inflatable paddling pools as numbers seeking asylum in the UK continue to rise.
The Zone des Dunes refugee camp in Calais. Several tented refugee camps have cropped up to replace the notorious 'Jungle' camp which was dismantled by French authorities in October and November 2016. The Zone borders land where the Jungle once housed as many as 10,000 migrants desperately seeking any way possible to get to Britain. It is claimed that the Zone is controlled by Albanian criminal gangs exploiting migrants often paying as much as €5,000 to make the illegal crossing between France and Britain. Many migrants are now making desperate and dangerous attempts to cross the English Channel (La Manche) by boat, kayak, surf board and even inflatable paddling pools as numbers seeking asylum in the UK continue to rise.
Post 9/11 World Trade Center attack.
John Philips walks away from Wall Street, his belongings crammed into a suitcase as he becomes a refugee from his luxury apartment just 2 blocks from the site of the Twin Towers collapse. He took the subway to a friend's house where he has been offered a couch to sleep on. John was granted special permission to enter his once luxury apartment close to where the World Trade Center Twin Towers used to stand. His apartment is now filled with dust and debris from the collapsed towers. John and residents of the building were evacuated following the attack which cut off water and electricity supplies. A week after the attack, residents were given just 15 minutes to gather necessary belongings and leave their apartments which by default rendered them homeless, perhaps the first refugees of the War on Terror. Residents were warned to check their balconies for victims of the Twin Towers who might have fallen to their deaths.
In the chaos of 9/11, John's sister Dr Sneha Ann Philip disappeared. John claimed she used to walk past the Twin Towers every morning on her way to work. He fears she might be a victim of the coordinated Al Qaeda attack which claimed over 2,000 victims at the site of the Twin Towers.
It was later discovered that his sister was indeed one of the earliest victims killed in the attack.
Bud Hopes, an Australian from Brisbane said, 'if it wasn't for Sgt Ogden's help we would never have made it out of the Superdome. It was hell in there. He has taken exceptional measures, above and beyond the call of duty, totally beyond the scope of his job, an exceptional man. He has the blessing of all the international tourists. it is incredible to think that so many of the armed forces here have lost their own homes and yet they are gathered here to help all these people. It is the most amazing thing I have seen ion all my life.'
Bud Hopes has become the 'leader' of the band of some 50 or so trapped tourists, caught up in the hell that is Hurricane Katrina and her aftermath. Sgt Ogden said of Bud, 'if he was a soldier, he would have made an excellent general.'
