Brad Pitt revisits the Lower 9th ward, devastated by Hurricane Katrina to present 'Make it Right' where architects' designs are unveiled to the public. The pink project sprung up over a couple of days, where mock housing in shocking bright pink is strewn around the still devastated Lower 9th Ward. Here an old set of steps to where a house once stood is surrounded by pink 'houses.'
Katrina 8 years later. Debris in a ruined house. In a tale of two cities, the hardest hit neighbourhoods struggle to revitalize and return. Many half finished or blighted properties and vacant overgrown lots remain dotted throughout the landscape with limited new construction projects. Residents who have returned complain of limited services, infrequent police patrols, high crime rates, rampant mosquitos and uncontrolled vermin.
Katrina 8 years later. In a tale of two cities, the hardest hit neighbourhoods struggle to revitalize and return. Contractors working for Brimmer Construction Services begin the extensive process of rebuilding a formerly derelict house. Many half finished or blighted properties and vacant overgrown lots remain dotted throughout the landscape. Residents who have returned complain of limited services, infrequent police patrols, high crime rates, rampant mosquitos and uncontrolled vermin.
A 'floatel' passes by heading inland away from the coast as tropical storm 'Bonnie' threatens the Gulf of Mexico. BP contractors prefer to house clean up crew workers in these floating container motels to save a few lousy dollars rather than station workers on land where they would benefit the local economy. Already reeling from poor decisions and an economic and environmental disaster thanks to BP's catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the corporation continues to oversee economic devastation wreaked on local communities. Private contractors continue to get rich taking BP's cash as local economies flounder. 'Floatels' do not benefit local communities in any way. BP contractors bring all food and supplies to the 'floatels.' In an area both economically and ecologically devastated by BP, this would appear to be yet another slap in the face to struggling local economies - and all to save a few bucks to make a few contractors even wealthier than they already are! This should be a national disgrace.
• 29 August 2006 - New Orleans - Louisiana. Lower 9th ward. On the one year anniversary of hurricane Katrina, and most of the area remains derelict and abandoned. Ribbons, inscribed with 'In loving memory of family,' flutters in a slight breeze. The styrofoam cross hangs beside front steps, all that remains of a house washed away in the flood waters that rushed through the area one year ago.

Eye on the storm. Robert Green, survivor of Hurricane Katrina and resident of the Lower 9th Ward sits outside his Brad Pitt inspired 'Make It Right' foundation home watching the first feeder bands of Hurricane Isaac come ashore. He and his family are not evacuating. Mr Green lost his mother and young granddaughter during Hurricane Katrina. Both drowned and he and his surviving family members weathered the storm for 7 hours on the roof of their wrecked house. The 7th year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina is tomorrow and with a storm lurking in the Gulf Mr Green admits to having chills as he remembers the tragedy of 7 years ago.
