  • 19 August 2006 - New Orleans - Louisiana. Faith Figueroa. Finding Faith. Faith (2 yrs) with her mother Miriam and her sister Anfernya (5yrs) back in the 9th Ward from which they were evacuated by boat as hurricane Katrina flooded their neighbourhood almost a year ago. The neighbourhood remains desolate, with few residents. Hurricane damage for the most part unrepaired. They now have to share their home with rats. Electricity is sporadic and expensive, the telephone company has still not repaired the lines and someone tried to break into their home a few days ago whilst they were in it. Miriam stands with her children, their home in an upstairs apartment behind them. They escaped into a boat from the top steps as hurricane Katrina flooded the area. A large puddle now forms in the ruined streets, a breeding ground for ferocious mosquitos.

  • 19 June, 2006. New Orleans, Louisiana. Housing problems. Keep Out! Saint Bernard Housing complex. The eerily deserted 1,300 unit housing project was flooded in the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. HANO, The Housing Authority of New Orleans has vowed to demolish the public housing, once riddled with crime and poverty. The housing authority proposes a mix of private and public housing created by private contractors. Former residents, fenced out with barbed wire argue that HANO is part of a greater city plot to keep poor, predominantly African Americans from returning home. The Complex is now fenced off and residents need to make an appointment at least 72 hours in advance to be permitted back to collect personal belongings.

Following a major break in an old 30-inch water main, officials and workers from New orleans Sewerage and Water board struggle to contain the millions of gallons of water flooding homes and streets in The Carrolton neighbourhood. Huge investment in public infrastructure is required to repair and upgrade the ageing water delivery system in the city. Following the break, low water pressure and a public boil advisory affected tens of thousands of Uptown residents.<br />
