• 29 August 2007. Lower 9th Ward, New Orleans, Louisiana.
Second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The Californian women of 'Indigo Eyes' provide a bit of relief from the sadness. The women play music and sign religious songs in the mostly deserted, empty remains of the decimated Lower 9th Ward. They stopped and wandered in the gutted Mt Carmel Church. The area remains mostly abandoned and overgrown, ghostly reminders of lives that once were. President Bush came to town and claimed he could be proud of what local and federal government have achieved in the city. Yet two years after the storm, it is quite clear that local and federal government are failing and have a great deal to do to live up their promises.
Second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The empty streets of the largely derelict and decimated Lower 9th Ward.
President Bush visited a high school less than a mile from the still demolished Alfred Lawless High School in the Lower 9th Ward. Bush posed for photo opportunities at a newly rebuilt high school, yet close by the ghostly remains of another high school show how so many have been left behind. The area remains mostly abandoned and overgrown. President Bush came to town and claimed he could be proud of what local and federal government have achieved in the city. Yet two years after the storm, it is quite clear that local and federal government are failing and have a great deal to do to live up their promises.
• 21st, December 2005. New Orleans, Louisiana. Jackie Russell stands outside her devastated home at 2416 Desire Street in the 9th Ward long after the devastating flood from Hurrican Katrina subsided. Jackie just wants to return home and had until this point been emotionally unable to deal with gutting the house she grew up in. Her hope is to be able to repair her house and bring her elderly mother back home before she dies. Jackie was only able to save a few precious china items, the rest of her house and all her belongings had to be thrown in the street.

Vanishing wetlands. Where once there was land, there is only the mere outline of old canals and channels, many dug by oil companies to pump their product ashore with little regard to the effects the chopping up of the wetlands would have. Chronic erosion of the land, a football pitch every 50 minutes, greatly reduced protection from hurricanes and impending BP oil slicks is the direct result of mismanagement and utter disregard for the environment. The army corps of engineers and the oil companies, together with inept government have a great deal to answer for.
View from a blackhawk helicopter flown by airmen of the Nebraska Air National Guard over southern Louisiana as they assist in the dumping of sand bags onto barrier islands in a vain attempt to prevent BP oil from getting into the inner wetlands. As valiant as their efforts are, the dumping of sand bags may well prove to be a complete waste of manpower, resources and money. Meanwhile, the mighty Mississippi river runs straight out to sea nearby, her valuable land building sediment carried far out into deep ocean as the region struggles to find a way to reverse the disastrous effects of man's interference with her flow.
• 05 May 2010. Venice, Louisiana. Deepwater Horizon, British Petroleum environmental oil spill disaster.
Just a fraction of what is at stake. Sunset over some of Louisiana's southernmost wetlands as seen from Venice Marina. If the oil pollution gets into these wetlands, it could potentially kill everything. The plants, the animals, the fish and life as locals know it could be gone forever. Only a great deal of luck from wind and water currents might the pollution be carried away from here. But it is going to land somewhere. The Florida Keys are hoping and praying it will not be there.
Hurry up and wait. Long lines of commercial fishermen wait as representatives from BP hand out four hour basic oil spill awareness diplomas to captains and crews. The diploma certifies the crews as able to assist in the deployment of oil containment booms. WIthout work helping to clear up BP's disgraceful catastrophic mess, the fishermen would all be out of work thanks to the oil spill forcing the closure of their fishing grounds. The handing out of diplomas was a shambles with mixed lists in various bundles taking a great deal of time to sort through. And just as fishermen felt close to the end of the line, the BP representatives packed up and went to lunch at midday!
