01 September, 2005. New Orleans, Louisiana.
Baton Rouge news photographer Rick Hannon makes a water run to the pool. There was no running water at the 'Hyatt from Hell' as we termed it and temperatures in our room reached almost 40C. We had sequestered the cleanest room we could find on the 19th floor, which was a bit foolish, because we had to carry as much water as we could carry up 19 floors of emergency stairs int he dark. The hotel had been occupied for days and all the toilets were full to the brim. We were able to flush our toilet with pool water and used the same water to 'shower' each evening after we returned from wading through increasingly fetid flood water. We were able to transmit our images from the makeshift 'Press Room' on the 4th floor. The Hyatt was one of the few buildings with a functioning internet. Temperatures in the small windowless box of a 'press room' were barely tolerable, with the temperature reaching 40C. The room was humid, sweaty and dank. At one point a huge Louisiana cockroach climbed up the wall just outside the room and stayed there for days. I discovered it had actually died where it stopped. Representatives of the Baton Rouge Advocate, The Miami Herald and LA Times along with others and myself from the Daily Mirror in London used the room on a daily basis, often running a 24 hour news gathering operation.
