16 images Created 22 Apr 2024

August 1999. Orkhon River Valley, Kharkhorin, (Karakoram) Mongolia.
The founding of the Genghis Khan Polo Club.
Taking Polo back to Mongolia. Local herders are recruited by an eccentric bunch of polo players and various individuals from India, Britain, the USA and elsewhere with the express aim of taking polo back to its birth place. A practice chukka is arranged on the steppes at the inaugural Ghengis Khan Polo Club in the Orkhon River Valley in central Mongolia, close to the birthplace and rumoured burial site of Ghegis (Chinggis) Khaan. Local nomadic herdsmen finish their day's work as early as possible and most, having travlled for many miles assemble at the makeshift polo pitch on the Steppes to learn the game.
