16 imagesDead fish wash up on just a half mile stretch of beach near Waveland, Mississippi. Whether it's early indications of oil pollution, or catch tossed from a local fishing pier, it is tragic to find so many dead fish in such a short stretch of beach. Either way, it shows a callous disregard for the environment in which we live. Meanwhile all around locals, tourists and visitors relax and enjoy the beauty of South Beach, an hour from New Orleans. Just a few miles off the coast, an impending disaster looms. With the continual flood of oil washing into the Gulf of Mexico and as winds turn and begin to push from the south, it is only and matter of when, not if the oil reaches the beaches. The barrier islands offshore are taking a battering soaking up the initial fronts of oil threatening everything in it's ever encroaching path.

Soldiers from the 2225th Multi-Role Bridge Company Louisiana National Guard commence work on a floating pontoon which will be used by local fishermen to load oil containment boom. With oil reaching ever closer to the St Bernard Parish wetlands, it is vitally important to get more oil containment booms in place.

18 imagesDanziger Bridge, New Orleans. On September 4th, 2005 in the chaos following hurricane Katrina, 5 New Orleans Police officers were involved in a fatal shooting on the bridge. Seventeen-year-old James Brissette was killed, and four others -- Jose Holmes, 19, his aunt, Susan Bartholomew, his uncle, Leonard Bartholomew III, and a teenage cousin, Lesha Bartholomew - were wounded. Two brothers, Lance and Ronald Madison, were walking on the bridge, and when they heard the gunfire began to run. The officers chased the brothers down, and injured Ronald, who was later fatally shot in the back as he tried to run away. Lance Madison was arrested and accused of firing at police. 5 NOPD officers, Kenneth Bowen, Robert Gisevius, Robert Faulcon and Anthony Villavaso as well as Arthur Kaufman were tried and convicted of Civil Rights Violations. U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt just granted a new trial for the five former New Orleans Police Department officers convicted in the Danziger Bridge shooting and the subsequent cover-up. Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Sal Perricone and the former first assistant U.S. attorney Jan Mann left US Attorney Jim Letten's office in disgrace following the discovery that both had been posting anonymous commentary on various cases to the NOLA.com blog. In March 2010 I photographed relatives caught up the crossfire, devastated by their losses. They now have to go through the trauma all over again as they seek justice for their loved ones. http://www.nola.com/crime/index.ssf/2013/09/reversal_of_danziger_bridge_co.html#incart_m-rpt-1
