Hurricane Katrina remembered. A decade of remembering that fateful day, August 29th 2005 when one of the largest hurricanes in US history smashed into Louisiana and Mississippi resulting in billions of dollars on destruction, millions of people displaced, thousands of homes and businesses destroyed and an estimated 1,400 deaths.

60 images29 August 2012. New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. On the 7th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Isaac swept ashore. The hurricane batters Uptown New Orleans in the early hours of the morning. Police and the Louisiana National Guard patrol the city as trees crash on homes and debris litters the flooded streets. Emergency evacuations. Woman, children and their pets are evacuated by the Louisiana National Guard from the inundated community of Braithwaite in Plaquemines Parish south of New Orleans following the overtopping of a levee. 74 images29 August 2011. Lower 9th Ward. New Orleans, Louisiana, USA. Hurricane Katrina 6 years later. Politicians come to speak, Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Make it Right houses spring up as inspired by Brad Pitt, residents and visitors turn the somber memorial into a celebration of life as they parade in a 'second line' along once devastated Tennessee Street, a neighbourhood rejuvenated by Brad Pitt's Make it Right Foundation. The Big Nine Social Aid and and Pleasure Club performed, backed up by the Sons of Jazz brass band. Danziger Bridge revisited with Dr Romell Madison, brother of the notorious bridge shooting victim Ronald Madison and James Brissette who were killed by New Orleans police in the days following hurricane Katrina. Local politicians and dignitaries including council woman Karen Carter, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-California) and Congressman Anh Joseph Cao (R-Louisiana), mayor Mitch Landrieu, General Russel Honore, Senator David Vitter, survivor Robert Green, Second line parades, Mardi Gras indians and returnees join in the memorial services in and around the Lower 9th Ward. 170 images29aug09-Hurricane Katrina 4th memorial The 4th anniversary for Hurricane Katrina is solemly remembered in the Lower 9th Ward following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Pockets of rebuilding and rebirth exist, mainly thanks to Hollywood celebrity Brad Pitt's make it Right Foundation. Dignitaries arrived to make speeches including, Mayor Ray C Nagin, his wife Seletha Nagin, Thomas Pepper, director of Common Ground, Tom Darden, Executive Director of Make it Right, Congressman Joseph Anh Coa, Council President Arnie Fielkow, Councilwoman Cynthia Willard Lewis, Congressman Charlie Melancon and his wife Peachy Clark, Tony Russell, head of FEMA, Councilman James Carter and State Representative Cedric Richmond and councilwoman jackie Clarkson amongst others. Architects toured the houses they were responsible for designing for Make it Right. Meanwhile block after block has been left to nature to reclaim amidst the abandoned lots and streets of the still largely derelict area. 54 images29aug08-Hurricane Katrina memorial & Hurrican Gustav preparation. From Jazz funerals led by Mardi Gras Indians to the Big Nine social and pleasure club leading mourners on a march through the Lower 9th Ward on the 3rd anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Reality TV Celebrity Mike Holmes of the TV show Holmes on Homes works to help prepare a Brad Pitt make it Right home ready for the new occupants as the area slowly begins the recovery process. Local councillor Cynthia Hedge-Morrell throws a wreath from the Claiborne Avenue Bridge into the Industrial Canal. Locals bury a symbolic coffin as they remember those killed by the storm. Abandoned overgrown lots remain in place as local and state government dismally fail to restore the area devastated by the storm. The Louisiana National Guard arrives in force at the Convention Center as the city braces for the imminent arrival of Hurricane Gustav.
