33 images15 & 16 December 2022. Calais and Dunkerque - Dunkirk, Pas de Calais, France. *NB - no model releases - editorial use only* African migrant refugee camp known as 'the old Lidl' camp on the outskirts of Calais and the Loon Plage migrant refugee camp near Dunkirk. It is from the camp near Dunkirk where migrants recently departed on December 14th and were smuggled on board a wholly inappropriate inflatable dingy across La Manche -The Channel to Britain. The boat capsized in the freezing cold and dark at 3am before reaching Britain. 39 migrant refugees were miraculously rescued, 4 are known to have drowned including one teenage boy and it is not known how many might still be missing? Conditions in the camps are desperate. There is little to no running water, electricity, medical facilities or sanitary stations. Temperatures as night averaged -6c, barely rising above freezing during the day. Aid workers with many charities provide some food and assistance and do all they can to help but it will never be enough. French authorities regularly crack down on the camps, sending battle hardened CRS police to break up the camps, destroy and confiscate tents and meagre migrant refugee belongings. The camps are mostly run by people smuggling gangs. African migrants generally try their chances at stowing themselves aboard trucks constantly crossing the channel. They do not in general have the funds to pay for boat crossings. If caught they continue to try and try again until they are successful. Boat crossings can range in price from from €1,500 - €3,000, however the price is often included in the total package agreed by people smugglers and the families of their victims. The total 'package' price for someone to be smuggled from Afghanistan to Britain can range from €5,000 to €12,000 - often leaving families deep in debt and often unable to ever repay the debt due to sky high interest rates on any loans they have to take out to pay the smugglers. The vast majority of refugees are Afghan and Kurdish, from Iraq, Iran and Turkey. Many are here as a direct result of failed US and British foreign policy and warring intervention in their homelands. Victims of proxy wars make up most of the other refugees with the exception of the recent influx of Albanian migrants who flee for economic reasons. Britain's disastrous Brexit has created a huge demand for cheap Europen labour which used to be filled by legal migrants once part of the EU. Yet in 'taking back control' of her borders, Britain has in effect completely lost control of them. As one Iraqi Kurd told me through chattering teeth as he stood in the cold, biting wind, wearing flimsy clothes and flip-flops on his feet - 'If Britain and America no come my country, I no come here.' It really is that simple......... Photo©; Charlie Varley/varleypix.com All rights reserved.

22 images05 July 2022. Paris, France. At home with Helen Wilson, a survivor of the Bataclan nightclub massacre of November 13th 2015 which claimed the lives of 90 people inside the club, 130 in total with co-ordinated attacks across Paris. Helen, an American living in Paris went to see the music of American rock band Eagles of Death Metal at the Bataclan nightclub with her former British boyfriend Nick Alexander. Soon after the shooting started, a Frenchman near where they were lying on the floor taking cover started shouting obscenities at the attackers. Helen describes how 2 terrorists came over to the area near where Helen and Nick were lying on the floor. One of the attackers raised his kalashnikov and opened fire. Nick was shot in the stomach and Helen was shot twice, once in each thigh. Helen raised her hands and begged the shooter to stop, which she says he did, then he calmly walked away. Nick's injuries however proved to be fatal and he died in her arms before police could rescue them. Nick Alexander was the only British victim of the horrific attacks. Helen miraculously survived despite losing 4 pints of blood and was saved by paramedics after police stormed the building. Helen's story is one of unimaginable tragedy, of strength, courage under fire, resilience and survival. Helen still receives counselling and physical therapy to help cope with the continuing aftermath of the attack. She is an inspiration to many she talks to as she speaks to other trauma survivors and disaffected youth. Photo Copyright ©; Charlie Varley/varleypix.com All rights managed.

18 images18 April 2022. Montreuil Sur Mer, Hauts de France, France. Emmanuel Labbaye, a bronze specialist applies wax to the statue of Field Marshal Douglas Haig on International monuments day. The statue which takes pride of place in 'La Grand Place,' the main square in Montreuil Sur Mer is currently undergoing much needed €40,000 in repairs. The ancient fortress town of Montreuil Sur Mer was the headquarters of the British Army during WW1. The statue, (the second one produced) is classified a heritage monument and has stood in tribute to Haig for the past 70 years. The first statue, erected in 1931 was melted down by German forces in WW2. Fortunately artist Paul Landowski kept the original mould and another 3 tons of bronze were used to recast the statue destroyed by Hitler's forces. The statue has for years generated controversy, firstly after publication of the 'Secret diaries of Douglas Haig,' where he was less than flattering of his French counterparts and also for his role in the deaths of over 20,000 British soldiers on the first day of the Battle of the Somme and the bloodshed which ensued. However current Mayor of Montreuil Pierre Ducrocq is happy his town can once again extend it's appreciation to 'her majesty's subjects.' He said, 'I am happy to receive our English friends today in this complicated post Brexit political climate. These different exchanges are placed within the framework of the Entente Cordiale we have maintained for centuries. Our wish is to once again develop the links which unite us with our English friends.' Special attention will be given to Marshal Haig's sword which has been stolen twice. A copy of a sword identical to the one used by Haig was discovered in the attic of a local house once billeted by British forces. It was copied in resin and cast in bronze and will be attached by Emmanuel Labbaye. Lord Astor, grandson of marshal Haig who was present to hand over a cheque from the 'Haig Statue Restoration Fund' said, 'there is a lot of interest for the British surrounding the restoration of this statue.' The restoration is also financed by the 'Association du Souvenir Français,' whose motto reads - 'We will remember them - to them immortality.'
