With crime beginning to pick up as people return to the city following the destruction of Hurricane Katrina, 300 Louisiana National Guardsmen returned to New Orleans to supplement local police and provide increased cover and back up in parts of the city that remain derelict and thinly populated since the devastating floods. MP's routinely stop cyclists without lights. MP's check ID's and look for drugs and weapons, often moved around neighbourhoods this way. City law states that a bicycle must have battery powered lights and a bicycle registration.
